Clear Aligners Vs. Traditional Braces

Both clear aligners and traditional metal braces are effective at straightening teeth. They both work by slowly aligning your teeth, resulting in a beautiful and straight smile. Many patients undergo orthodontic treatment with traditional braces if they have severely crooked or rotated teeth, large gaps between teeth, or other complex situations.

However, if your teeth are mildly crooked and you simply desire a straighter smile, clear aligners may be the ideal solution for you. Clear aligners are a great option if you want the following during treatment:

A smile free from metal braces

Eating your normal diet with no restrictions

Brushing and flossing as usual

Comfortable, near-invisible option

Fewer orthodontic appointments

The Clear Aligner Treatment Process

If you are considering clear aligner orthodontic treatment, you will first undergo an oral evaluation with our dentist. This will determine if your oral health is on track and if you are a good candidate for clear aligners.

If yes, we will take scans of your teeth that will be used to create the series of clear aligners. The number of clear aligners and your treatment length will vary, but most patients complete their treatment in 12-18 months.

Once you receive your clear aligners, you will need to wear your clear aligners for 20-22 hours each day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. Our dentist will determine how long you will wear each set of clear aligners, but commonly each phase lasts for 1-2 weeks until treatment is complete.

Compliance is the biggest factor in the success of your treatment. If you don’t feel like you can wear your clear aligners for the recommended hours each day, you may want to consider traditional braces instead.
